Gay and Lesbian Couples Take Vows Before City Hall

On June 5, 2010 eight couples met in front of City Hall for a commitment ceremony officiated by Ferndale Mayor Craig Covey, Mark Bidwell, Deb Dysert, and Kevin Kinsell, and hosted by MCC (Metropolitan Community Church) and Triangle Foundation.  The past three Ferndale Mayors have performed such ceremonies, which are not legal marriages, but a public proclamation of love that is recognized by friends, family and the City of Ferndale.  “This is one of my favorite things to do each year,” said Covey, who made history as the openly gay mayor to be elected in Michigan.  The ceremony is the traditional kick off to Motor City Pride, held the first Sunday in June each year in Downtown Ferndale.  Couples get to exchange vows, enjoy some wedding cake, and make a personal and political statement.  For more information about this Ferndale tradition, go to http://motorcitypride.org/commitment.php.  For more Ferndale area LGBT news, check out The Ferndale 115 News LGBT Section, which is sponsored by Just 4 Us, at http://www.ferndale115.com/lgbtnews.html.
