Fire Gives New Acting Chief a Busy Start

A fire in the 700 block of Spencer gave Acting Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan a busy start to his first week in charge, since Chief Roger Schmidt retired after 33 years on Friday.

The fire is being investigated by Ferndale Fire Department and an investigation team with Oakland County.

According to Sullivan the fire started in a cluttered room, causing damage to property in the room, along with smoke and fire damage.  A 15-year-old female was taken to Beaumount Hospital overnight for treatment that is either smoke-related or due to an anxiety attack, or combination of both.

The damage is not visible from the street.

The Fire Department is currently transitioning, as Chief Schmidt’s retirement started Friday just a week after announcing that he would be taking the buy-out option offered by the City.  Acting Chief Sullivan, who is currently Captain, will find out at the City Council meeting at 6pm tonight (May 3, 2010) if he will remain Acting Chief, or if the City will look to hire an interim.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
