Ferndale Green Week Celebrations Planned

A week-long celebration of all things “green” is planned for April 17-23, 2010 throughout Ferndale.  The Environmental Sustainability Commission has teamed up with the DDA (Downtown Development Authority) and other local businesses to “raise awareness and empower businesses and residents to make the community greener and environmentally safer for all who live, work and play in Ferndale.”  Each day there will be fun and educational events throughout the city. 

 

Sat. April 17 – CRAFT DAY

Sun. April 18 – VEGETARIAN DAY and BICYCLE DAY

Mon. April 19 – BUTTERFLY DAY

Tues. April 20 – CLEAN GREEN DAY

Thurs. April 22 – 40TH EARTH DAY

Fri. April 23 – ORGANIC DAY

 

CRAFT DAY

 

The weekend will kick off with CRAFT DAY, a craft revival presented by Handmade Detroit from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. at The Loving Touch, 22634 Woodward.  There will be 25 vendors of handmade goods, and no charge to get in. 

 

VEGETARIAN DAY AND BICYCLE DAY

 

VegFest, presented by VegMichigan will take place at Ferndale High School (881 Pinecrest) from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M.  There is no charge to attend and enjoy vegan samples from area restaurants and see earth-friendly vendors and educators.  The main speakers are Rory Freedman, best-selling co-author of the “Skinny Bitch” book series and former Detroit Piston John Salley.  KLM bike and fitness will have a bicycle coral set up at the vegfest so you can have your bicycle locked up safely while you are visiting the VegFest for no charge.  Last year nearly 2,000 people attended the event.  The Nightmoves bio-bus will be transporting people to and from VegFest all day - pick up is on Troy street behind the WAB (22646 Woodward).

 

For Bicycle Day, Continental Bike Shop will be doing a FREE spring bicycle check-up just behind the WAB on Sunday from 11-5.

 

BUTTERFLY DAY

 

The Ferndale Beautification Commission is giving a special presentation on how to start a garden to attract butterflies.  The free presentation will be at the Kulick Community Center (1201 Livernois) from 7-9 P.M on Monday, April 19, 2010.

 

CLEAN GREEN DAY

 

On Tuesday, April 20 from 7-8 P.M. at the Kulick Community Center (1201 Livernois) there will be a free demonstration of how to make your own safe household cleaning products.

 

40TH EARTH DAY CELEBRATION

 

Earth Day was started 40 years ago in Wisconsin as a day for educators to get together and share information about the environment.  Now it is a world-wide event.  In order to celebrate and honor those in the community who help protect out planet, The Loving Touch (22634 Woodward) is hosting an Earth Day Celebration beginning at 7 P.M.  on Thursday, April 22.  Businesses that won Green Awards will be recognized.  There will be free massages, healthy food, vendors, green movies and much more!  The Loving Touch will also be featuring organic beer and a smoke-free environment. 

 

ORGANIC DAY

 

Western Market (447 W. 9 Mile) will be having an Earth Day After Party on Friday, April 23 from 4-7 P.M. in the parking lot of their family-owned fresh foods market.  They will be offering samples of what they call “Good. Real. Food,” including their new line of grass-fed, organic and natural meats. There will also be natural, organic and/or vegan  products from local businesses like Strawberry Moon, Bizzie Lizzie, Living Zen Organics and McClure’s Pickles.  There will be a composting demonstration from Green Thumb Garden Center, products from local “green” companies, and information from a variety of environmentally-conscious groups.  There is also a 10% off coupon for organic produce, which you can pick up at events earlier in the week.
